About the Improv Match
The history of improv in Québec
Theatrical improvisation holds a very special place in Quebec culture. It all begins in 1977, in Montreal, when Robert Gravel and Yvon Leduc invent the concept of the National Improv League (LNI). Inspired by hockey, they decide to transform improv into a real sport-spectacle: a rink, team jerseys, a referee and above all... completely wild improvisations! Quickly, the phenomenon gains momentum and becomes a staple of the cultural scene.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the LNI establishes itself as an institution, with televised matches and stars who mark the collective imagination. Improv then spreads to schools, CEGEPs and universities, giving birth to a pool of artists and actors who continue today to fuel Quebec's artistic community.

Improv today
Nowadays, improv remains extremely popular in Quebec. You'll find local leagues in most cities, dynamic school leagues and international events that bring together improvisers from around the world. For many people, attending an improv match is part of Quebec cultural traditions, as much as going to see a comedy show or a hockey game.

Since its founding in 2005, La Rocambolesque has cultivated a vibrant community of improvisers dedicated to pushing the boundaries of live theatrical creation. Through innovative formats that reimagine and enhance the traditional Improv Match, they've established themselves as pioneers in the field.

Operating out of their own venue, Aux Angles Ronds, La Rocambolesque presents improv shows most nights of the week, featuring diverse formats and showcasing performers—many of whom honed their craft through La Rocambolesque's own training programs. This creates a dynamic ecosystem where learning and performance feed into each other, fostering both artistic growth and community connection.
